Geriatric medicine

Function. Autonomy. The person.

Understanding health in older age through everyday ability, individual priorities and the support a person needs.

Beyond a list of diagnoses.

Geriatric medicine considers the interaction between health conditions, functional ability and a person’s circumstances. The institute’s public program combines conventional clinical assessment with a functional perspective on healthy aging.

Function gives research a concrete human context. It asks how someone moves through their environment, manages daily activities and participates in the life they value. These questions help connect medical knowledge with the practical purpose of care.

A multidimensional assessment.

The institute identifies frailty, falls, sarcopenia, chronic pain and cognitive or emotional difficulties among its clinical and research interests. These areas need a coordinated assessment rather than interpretation through a single isolated score.

Examination, history and appropriate assessment tools can contribute different information. An educational website or a research software prototype cannot perform that clinical synthesis for an individual. The value of digital methods is in organizing information for informed professional review.

Care in context.

Community settings matter to both research and implementation. The ICOPE framework describes how services and systems can support integrated care for older people. This provides a useful reference when considering how an assessment connects to available support.

The institute’s project in South Kivu and its educational initiative in Côte d’Ivoire bring attention to functioning, independence and the everyday environment. Their project pages provide the original report and course information.

What digital research can contribute.

A useful digital record should preserve the assessment method, context and limits of interpretation. Combining variables into a dashboard should not erase the distinctions between a reported symptom, a measured finding and a clinician’s judgment.

ProAge Atlas explores this principle at the research level. Its focus is evidence organization and method comparison, with expert review kept visible.
